Group works on

Essential oils are the odoriferous / fragrant / volatile constituents found in plants . Chemically they are made up of mono and sesquiterpenes and their alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols , ethers and esters. They are well known to impart medicinal and emotional values and have a very significant place in food, flavor, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Group works on analysis of aroma / volatile principles / essential oils, mainly mono and sesquiterpenes, phenyl propanoids etc and standardization of bioactive fractions and quality of the essential oil by various spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques viz. GC, CGHSS, GC-MS , HPLC, MS, 1H & 13C-NMR etc.

Group also wok on isolation and characterization of different chemical compounds viz. flavonoids, quinonoids, iridoids and other poly phenols.

Presently the group is exploring the prospects of essential oils of spice crops, Citrus cultivars and other medicinal and aromatic plants and other natural products, which may be useful in health management.

Achievements

Major achievements are in the development of bioactive compound rich essential oils and hepatoprotective natural products, leading to many patents and papers. One of them has been commercialized (from RRL-Jammu) on LIV-1 for the cure of liver disorder.
