Group works on

  1. Biological, biochemical and molecular characterization of plant viruses affecting ornamental, horticultural and crop plant.
  2. Development of diagnostics for plant viruses for their sensitive detection in economically important crops.
  3. Development of transgenic plants for resistance against viruses.

Objectives

  1. Authentic identification of virus isolates for placing them in a proper group/ subgroup.
  2. Development of sensitive diagnostic kits for virus indexing of Indian isolates of Cucumoviruses and Geminiviruses in commercial crops.
  3. Genetic transformation of tobacco, chilli and tomato for raising of virus resistant transgenic plants utilizing CP and Replicase gene of Tomato Leaf Curl Virus and Cucumber mosaic virus.

Achievements

National

  1. Plant viruses viz. Eggplant mottled crinkle virus (EMCV) from Solanim melongena & S. capsicastrum, Chrysanthemum aspermy virus (CAV) from Chrysanthemum and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) from Chrysanthemum, Carnation, Amaranth, Datura, Gladiolus, Banana, Tomato and Henbane have been characterized and their antisera have been raised.
  2. Immuno-detection techniques viz. ELISA, ISEM, Western blot assay have been standardized for detection of EMCV, CMV and CAV. PCR for Tomato leaf curl virus in tomato, cucurbits, croton & weeds and RT-PCR for Cucumber mosaic virus in Amaranth, Chrysanthemum, Gladiolus, Banana, Tomato & Datura have been developed for sensitive diagnosis.
  3. Coat protein and movement protein Cucumber mosaic virus (Amaranth) and DNA-A of Pumpkin yellow mosaic virus were cloned and sequenced for molecular characterization.
  4. Transformation of tomato using coat protein gene of CMV and Tomato leaf curl virus has been done and transgenic plants expressing coat protein of CMV and TLCV have been successfully generated.
International

  1. An isolate of Eggplant Mottled Crinkle Tombusvirus from Solanum melongena and its polyclonal antibody deposited to the American Type Culture Collections, USA.
  2. Sequence data of coat protein gene of CMV-Amaranth (AF 198622), CMV-Datura (AF 281864), CMV-Henbane (AF 350450), movement protein of CMV-A (AF 414078), coat protein region of TLCV-Pumpkin (AF 381977, AY 396151), Acalypha yellow mosaic virus (AY 188956), Indian Croton gemini virus (AF 188965) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (AF 375241) submitted to GenBank.
  3. Collaboration with Scottish Crop Research Institute, Dundee, UK for research on viruses associated with Groundnut Rosette disease of groundnut.
