Biodiversity Angiosperm Taxonomy, Experimental taxonomy and Herbarium (National facility)

Objectives

  • To develop and maintain a Herbarium as a national Facility
  • Survey, collection, identification and documentation of the Floristic wealth of the country
  • To maintain active links with other institutions by way of Loan and Exchange of Herbarium specimens and related literature
  • To develop Computer based databases on plant resources
  • To carry out Biodiversity Assessment for Environmental Impact Assessment
  • To carry out genetic diversity studies in taxonomic complexes and economically important taxa
  • To undertake Floristic and reversionary studies on Indian taxa of flowering plants
  • To study and monitor the rare and endangered species in Conservation perspectives

Achievements

Developed an International recognized Herbarium that is being maintained as a National facility. It maintains exchange relations with all National and International research Institutes. The Herbarium acts as a data bank on plants and helps in their correct identification. The current holdings of the Herbarium has reached ca. 2,25,00 specimens of which 90,000 are flowering plants; 500 gymnosperms; 3000 pteridophytes; 10,000 bryophytes; 1,05000 lichens and 16,000 carpological collections.

So far a number of exploration tours have been conducted to the various pats of the country for detailed inventories and documentation of the flora. In particular, the Biodiversity Assessment of Tons Valley, Garhwal Himalaya, Rajaji National Park, Corbett Tiger Reserve, Dudhwa National Park, Valley of Flowers and other phytogeographically interesting areas like Netarhat in Bihar and a few districts of J&K, A.P., Orissa and U.P. have been accomplished. Several projects on the taxa-specific Biodiversity assessments for example revisionary studies on genera Ixora, Clematis, Podophyllum, Berberis and revision on family Oleaceae have been successfully completed. The taxonomic revisions completed have International relevance and help in revision of the group globally. These studies have led to a large number of publications in the recent past.

On Going Projects

  • Biodiversity assessment and taxonomic revision of the genus Astragalus L. Leguminosae- Papillionoideae in India
  • Biodiversity assessment and taxonomic revision of the genus Pedicularis L. (Scrophulariaceae) in India
  • Inventory, characterization, preliminary evaluation and ex-situ conservation of wild genetic resources of Citrus and its close relatives in India
  • Studies on legume resources of Uttar Pradesh: taxonomy, distribution, utilization, cultivation and conservation
  • Taxonomy of Trigonella L.

Feed Back Required

  • Current awareness of the literature regarding the discovery of new taxa as well as new records
  • Details of the availability of the type specimens in various herbaria of the world
  • Current publication on the plant taxonomy
  • Access to the Databases on published illustrations of plants worldwide
  • Details of availability of experts on various taxa
